Research and planning-Genre

The word genre comes from the French word 'kind'.The genre of our film is romance. Since starting this project i always wanted to do a romance as i was interested in the theme of this genre, for example their codes and conventions are very simple but yet effective. To get a better idea of this i started researching by watching and studying already established romantic films both feature films and short films.(above)
A Narrative Arc I made
When doing this i discovered a strong pattern which ran in most of the feature length films. The structure of the narrative hardly differed between them. For example in almost all cases there is a meeting of two people or more, the chemistry between the intended characters is instantly obvious to the audience. Following the conventional narrative arc the characters will be presented with a problem or set back, this could for example be an argument. We then see this problem being resolved which will typically result in the characters uniting happily together. As a member of the audience intended for these films i found myself expecting certain things for example themes. Quite obviously the main theme is love but i also thought about lust and chemistry between the two characters. As well as watching these films i also looked at the marketing side of things and decided to deconstruct some film posters. I did this to get an idea of their target audience's and the codes and conventions as well as gathering ideas for my own poster. I studied some famous film posters which I thought were suitable and similar to our short film.
